The Fashion Week at M.A.

Fashion week is the week when the whole industry goes mad, bringing out the absolute best and worst out of everyone involved.

Caroline issa wears merchant archive ss15 collection to new york fashion week 2014

For me, historically, it has been about buying. I would tear from location to location and from city to city to view one collection after another. I would desperately try to stay on schedule and to not let my good eating and exercising habits go out of the window, although I have been known to rebel and book a holiday to Mexico right in the middle of fashion month one season as I simply did not want to conform. Of course now we have our own collection to show, and so to the 'turning of the tables’.

This will be our 5th Merchant Archive collection, and after dipping our toe last season, it will be our first real push in to the wholesale market.  It’s a really exciting time for us. How amazing would it be to finally make our collection available to our customers through a network of selected retailers around the world? M.A going global!

The collection feels stronger than ever. We know our customer well and she knows and trusts us. Keeping true to our ethos, great cloth and no compromise, we have added shapes using inspiration from our rich archive.

Aware of the importance of visual impact we recruited the wonderful Caroline Issa to style our look book and film once the collection was complete. We chose to do a film over a catwalk in order to show the garments moving and to help buyers and press understand the brand’s identity.

Of course sales are what fashion week is really all about, it’s a gigantic moveable trade fair. That’s easy to forget when heavenly creatures are gliding along catwalks in mesmerising creations, it all feels more like art or a wonderful temporary installation.

I love the way fashion traverses this line. It is of course creative but must be a business to survive. So here we are at this pivotal moment, watching the emails come in from buyers of leading stores who are excited to view the collection. We are receiving requests from celebrities and stylists to wear the collection during fashion week, the ultimate compliment. There is a general buzz of excitement in our studio at all times as we prepare to launch our brand, our new collection, our hard work - frown and laughter lines incorporated into each garment - to the rest of the fashion industry.

Wish us luck…
